If you’re the type of person who’s always on the go and who travels a lot, then you might be interested at these portable applications I collected below that will increase your productivity even when you’re away from home or from your own personal computer.

1. Favorite Web Browser

It’s always nice to bring your favorite web browser anywhere you go so you can always have all your bookmarks, plugins, and settings along with you. I know that most of the computers now have their own web browser installed but it’s still better if you’re going to use something which is you’re more familiar and comfortable with, right?

2. File Archiver

There are times when we receive an e-mail, we need to use a tool that can open attached files like RAR, ZIP, ISO, and etc. that is why we need to have a portable file archiver on our external device.

3. Media Player

If you have a lot of movies or songs saved on your external device, you should always be ready to have a portable media player too so you’ll always be sure that you can play it on any computer.

One main advantage of Notepad++ over the built-in Windows text editor, Notepad, is tabbed editing, to easily work with multiple open files.

8. Office Suite

If you need to finish your thesis while you travel, OpenOffice.org Portable will be your best friend. It includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation tool, drawing package and database so you can easily access and edit all your documents anytime, anywhere.

9. Blogger Tools

If you’re a blogger, it’s really a must to have Windows Live Writer on your portable device so you don’t have to setup everything again from blog settings to FTP and Ping settings especially if you work with multiple computers.

Aside from portable WLW, a blogger should also use a nice screen capture tool every time you need to take screenshots and a portable FTP client so you can always take you server list or settings with you.

Never Forget To Unplug USB Device Before Shutting Down Your PC Again

Have you ever experienced shutting down your PC then “ooops you just realized that your USB device is still plugged in” or you left your flash drive in an internet cafe, and when you come back for it, it’s already gone. That is really frustrating especially the second scenario. So if you do not want to experience these frustrating situations, check out these tools that will remind you to unplug your USB device before shutting down your PC.

1. Flash Drive Reminder

Flash Drive Reminder is a lightweight, freeware utility that pops up a reminder if you log off Windows
without removing your flash drive. It adds an entry to the AutoPlay dialog that pops up when you insert a flash drive into a computer. If you select that entry, the application will launch.

Flash Drive Reminder has two versions:

1. Standard Version

The Standard version pops up a small window when Reminder starts. This window serves as a reminder that the flash drive is still in the computer.

2. Quiet Version

The Quiet version has no options and does not pop up a window when you insert your flash drive. All it does is pop up a reminder to remove the drive when you log off or shut down the computer.

NOTE: You will not be able to use the Windows’ safely remove hardware utility when the application is running.

2. FlashRecall

FlashRecall will show a popup window and play a beep with the motherboard speaker (if available) when you shutdown your PC or logoff the current user without removing the USB device.

FlashRecall has a portable version which you can use when you’re in an internet cafe or somewhere else.

How To Automatically Scan USB When Inserted Using Kaspersky Internet Security

I already tried using different antivirus and the best for me is Kaspersky Internet Security because it’s the only one that didn’t slow down my computer and it has all the features that I need, but what I like most in KIS is that it can automatically scan USB device when inserted. We all know that USB is a big threat for our PC because it can easily transfer deadly virus especially when we often use it in different computers. That’s why if you’re using Kaspersky, make sure that you activate automatic scanning of removable drives to keep your computer safe from USB threats. Here’s how:

1. Open Kaspersky Internet Security. Click Settings.

2. Click Scan My Computer. On the Scan removable drives on connection option, choose Full Scan.

3. Click Apply and click OK.

From now on, every time you insert a USB device, Kaspersky will automatically scan it to keep your PC safe from virus and other threats coming from removable drives/devices.

How To Split And Merge The Files Using WinRAR

Do you have files on your PC that you want to split into several parts so you can attach it on your email or save it on your USB? We all know that many email services like Yahoo! Mail has a limitation when attaching a file. You cannot send files that are larger than 25 MB. Good thing there are other services that help you send files to your friends no matter how big it is just like Pipebytes.

But if you really want to send big files using your email, you can still do it but you have to split your files into several parts first before you can attach and send the files one by one.

How to split a file into several parts using WinRAR*:

1. Right-click on the file that you want to split into several parts.

2. Click “Add to archive…”

I chose to split a video with the size of 5 MB.

3. Under the option Split to volumes, either enter the desired maximum size of each file part or choose an appropriate size from the available drop down option. In my case I entered 1 MB for each part of file.

4. Now the video was already split into several parts with the size of 1 MB each.

How to merge the files using WinRAR:

1. Right-click on the file.

2. Click “Extract files…”

3. Choose your preferred destination path and click OK. You’re done!
