I admit that I’m a computer addict and I surf the internet everyday for about 6-8 hours. If you’re like me, then probably your temporary internet files are already taking up some of your disk space that’s why it is very important to delete these files often because it can take up a lot of storage space on your hard drive and can eventually cause your processor to slow down as it takes up valuable resource space. Fortunately, modern web browsers have an easy method for deleting these files, and today, I’m going to show you how you can automatically clear history when you close Firefox.

I’m going to show you first how you can delete the history/temporary files manually:

* For this tutorial, I’m going to use Firefox 3.

1. Go to Tools menu –> Clear Recent History or just press CTRL + SHIFT + DELETE.

2. A new window will appear. Choose the Time Range and the Items you want to clear and click Clear Now.

That’s it! Now I’m going to show you how you can automatically clear history when Firefox closes:

1. Go to Tools menu –> Options. Go to Privacy tab. On the option “Firefox will:” choose Use custom settings for history.

2. Check Clear history when Firefox closes and click Settings so you can choose which items should be deleted every time you close the browser and click OK. Click OK again to close the Options window.

That’s it! From now on, every time you close Firefox, your temporary internet files will be deleted.

Both Windows and application programs tend to leave temporary files on your hard drive, taking up space. Like in my case, I have McAfee Anti-virus installed on my PC and it always leaves a lot of temporary files when it is updating. A hard drive that is close to being “full” can cause Windows to slow down or interfere with efficient disk access and virtual memory operations.

If you surf the web a lot, your temporary internet files folder can become quite large, causing your web browser to slow down or malfunction. To prevent this from happening, you have to run disk cleanup at least once a month.

How to run disk cleanup:

1. Go to My Computer.

2. Right-click on Local Disk (C:) and click Properties.

3. Click the Disk Cleanup button.

4. Disk Cleanup window will popup, calculating how much space you’ll be able to free on (C:). Wait for it to finish.

5. Check Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin. Click OK, then click Yes.

6. Wait for Disk Cleanup to finish cleaning your Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin.
