Microsoft Windows Automatic Updates is a service provided by Microsoft that provides updates for the Microsoft Windows Operating System and its installed components, including Internet Explorer and other Microsoft Windows software, such as Microsoft Office, Windows Live applications, and Microsoft Expression.

It is recommended that we install updates automatically to ensure maximum protection against latest security threats and provide few old bug fixes. However, once the security updates get installed, it starts displaying a notification to restart your system in regular intervals and this is really annoying when you are doing something really important. So how do we turn it off? How can we stop Windows from nagging us to restart our PC?

There are few ways to stop Windows from restarting after an update:

1. Disable auto restart for automatic updates in Group Policy.

a. Go to Start, click Run and type gpedit.msc and click OK.

b. Navigate to Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update.

c. Double click “No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations”.

d. Select Enabled and click OK.

2. Disable Temporarily – Using Run Command

a. Go to Start, click Run and type net stop wuauserv.

b. Click Enter.

This will stop the whole Windows Update process until next system restart.

3. Leave Me Alone!

Leave Me Alone! is a useful tool if you want to instantly stop the annoying popup message from nagging you! This tool only temporarily turns off the source of these restart messages. The next time you boot up your PC, you’ll still get the annoying “restart your computer” message after installing Windows updates.
