Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger for Windows is an app that lets you chat with your Facebook friends without the need to go to the Facebook.com. In addition, this app also shows you the latest updates from your friends in ticker and gives you quick notifications about what’s happening on your Facebook profile.

Using Facebook Messenger makes you feel that you’re still viewing it in a web browser without the newsfeed. There’s an option to dock it at the right side of the screen so you can do other things like doing your report while checking the latest updates from your friends in ticker.

It’s also very fun and easy to chat with multiple friends using Facebook Messenger since it uses tabbed chat interface. However, the app doesn’t support group chat yet and the video calling as well so you still have to open your browser just in case you want to use any of these features.

Currently, Facebook Messenger is on trial mode and it only supports Windows 7. You may give it a try by visiting this link.

Take This Lollipop

Take This Lollipop is an interactive website that offers a customized suspense/horror movie that stars YOU and a creepy Facebook stalker. It starts by collecting information from your Facebook account and then it will show you a video of a sweaty, crazy-eyed, dirty-fingered man who goes through your Facebook profile, photos, and local information in order to hunt you down. Once he finds your exact location, he will head to his car and starts to drive until he reaches you.

This video is an eye-opener for us that we should be really careful on what to put and what-not on Facebook (and even on other sites) because one can easily find all the information in order to track you down especially if the person is really obsessed with you.

Take This Lollipop has been an instant hit since it went online last month and a lot of personal horror videos have been circulating on the web. If you don’t want to see yourself being stalked by this guy, you can just watch some of these videos like the one below but I highly recommend you try it using your own account so you can feel the excitement and thrill of being hunted down by a maniac!

Facebook Timeline

Aside from the Facebook drastic overhaul, they also announced Timeline which is a cool, new way to view everything that has ever happened in your Facebook lifespan. Curious about how it looks like? Unfortunately, it’s only open for open graph developers but Facebook said that it will available for everyone in the coming weeks. But if you’re really excited and cannot wait for the public launch, here’s a simple way to enable it.

How to enable Facebook Timeline

1. Log-in to Facebook and enable Developer mode, if you haven’t already. Just search for “Developer” in the search box and click the app that has more than 1 million monthly users and then add/allow it.

2. Once you’re in the Developer app, click Create New App and give your new app a display name and namespace and agree to the Platform Privacy agreement.

3. Once done, you should see your app’s name near the top of the page. Look for the Open Graph header and click the Get started using the Open Graph link.

4. Create a test action for your app. You can just copy the example like read a book, or watch a movie.

5. Complete the 3-step action configuration page. TIP: Just click Save at the bottom of the page.

6. Once done, go back to your Facebook home screen and you’ll see an invite to try Timeline at the top of the page. Click Get it now to get started.

Facebook Timeline looks really great but it might take a while for me to get familiar with the new design.

Facebook for Android gets an overhaul

At first, you wouldn’t really notice any cool changes on the latest version except for the photo, status, and check-in buttons above the News Feed that lets you easily upload photos, update status, or check-in to places.

But as you play around with it and check all of its features, you’ll notice that some things have really changed.

Facebook for Android – Major updates

Here are some important changes that Facebook did for this new version:

Made it easier to share who you want and improved the sharing tool to add privacy controls on posts and match your settings on the web site.

Added the ability to tag friends and places in posts. You can also tag friends on your comments the usual way, @name of Facebook friend.

Added the ability to tag your friends in photos. I was quite surprised to know that Facebook for Android doesn’t allow photo tagging before because Facebook for HTC Sense, which I’m using to upload photos, allows me to tag my friends.

Facebook for Android – Minor updates

With the latest update, you can now browse Facebook photos by just swiping your finger from left to right or vice versa. No more right/left buttons anymore! I also noticed that the photos load much faster now.

The notifications and messages also got a new look!

Facebook also said that Profile and Group walls have a new design but it still looks the same for me. There were also some number of crashes and performance issues that have been fixed in this update.

I have also tried if I can still see blocked Facebook profiles and photos but that trick doesn’t work anymore.

From black background lightbox to a cool and relaxing white

One of the most obvious changes you’ll notice is the background color when you click on the picture.

I’m so glad that Facebook team has finally decided to replace its highly criticized black lightbox with a more pleasing white background. “It features a cleaner interface that makes it even easier to enjoy your photos”, Shaffer writes. In addition, the focus is now more on the photo, not on the surrounding frame. Before, I even use the traditional right-click + open in new tab every time I want to view pictures just to avoid seeing that black lightbox.

Bigger photos and faster loading time

Another big change that Facebook has started to roll out is the increased of the resolution of the photos. “From 720 pixels, it’s now 960 and it loads twice as fast!”, says Shaffer. Photos that you have already uploaded to Facebook will be displayed at the higher resolution too.

I’ve noticed that Facebook has been very busy rolling out awesome updates since the launch of Google Plus. What other changes do you want to see next time?

Actually, I was also surprised and happy at the same time to see an extension called Google+Facebook that allows you to see your Facebook stream and update your status right inside Google+.

Google+Facebook is very easy to install. Currently, it only supports Chrome and Firefox so make sure that you’re using one of them now. To start, visit Google+Facebook site and click the big orange button that says Get Google+Facebook.

If you’re using Firefox, you must restart your browser to complete the installation. If you’re using Chrome, you can go directly to your Google+ account. You’ll notice that there’s already a Facebook icon just beside the home button. Click it and you’ll be asked to connect with Facebook to activate the extension.

Once you’ve connected your Facebook account, you can now view your stream and update your status without the need to go to the Facebook website.

The sad part is that you can not like nor comment to any post.

To use this new feature, first you need to login to your Facebook account. Once logged in, open your Chat box and click any friend you want to include on the group chat. Click the Actions menu at the top of the chat window and choose Add Friends to Chat.

Enter the names of your friends that you want to include on the group chat. You can include as many friends as you want and I’m not sure if there’s a limit on the number of friends you can invite.

* I tried adding up to 60 and it’s still possible.

Facebook is really trying their best to add more great features so they can still be at the top against their other competitors especially the much awaited public launching of Google+. Are these features they’re rolling out are enough to keep them on the top spot? We’ll see.

Just want to remind you guys that for you to enjoy the FB video calling, you must have a webcam and mic and they should be properly installed on your PC.

* It’s not really required to have a webcam, however, your friends wouldn’t see you during the video call and it’s unfair for them.

When you’re ready, login to your Facebook account and visit Facebook Video Calling. Click the green “Get Started” button and you’ll be asked to download the video call plug-in installer. Once downloaded, run the file and it will automatically download and install the plug-in. Once done, FB video calling has just been activated and it’s time to try it!

To test it, just check your online friends and look for someone who has also activated this feature. To know if the person has activated it already, just click his/her name and you’ll see a small video call icon. Press it and the video call will start. If your friend has not yet setup the video call feature, a message will pop up on his screen asking him to setup the video call but if he had already done that, you just have to wait for him to answer your call.

Video will start as soon as he answer your call so always be ready to smile. Enjoy!

fbDownloader is a free Windows application that saves you from the hassle of pulling all your Facebook photos by doing the traditional “right-click + save as” every time. It lets you backup and download all the precious photos from your Facebook account, photos tagged to you, or even your friends’ photo albums in just a few clicks.

To use fbDownloader, first you must download and install it on your PC. The installation process is just a bit hassle for me though. First, you’ll be asked to install different programs during the installation. However, it’s not mandatory to install them. Just click Decline if you don’t like it. After the installation, when I thought everything is alright, it asked me to download and install .Net Framework 4. I was re-directed to the Microsoft website where I downloaded the required file. After the installation of .Net Framework, at last, I was able to launch fbDownloader.

fbDownloader is very easy to use that even your grand ma can use it without any problem (believe me!). You just have to enter your email and password and once logged in, “allow” the application to access you account. That’s it! You can now choose which photos you wish to download.

As I have told you earlier in this post, you can choose to download your own photo albums, photos tagged to you, or even your friends’ pictures. You can also make the picture black & white if you want! The default download location is in the Pictures folder but you can change it to your preferred location.

Downloading process is pretty fast and the pictures do not have any loss in quality which is really nice.

fbDownloader is really an immense time-saver for downloading Facebook photo albums. So simple and easy to use, and lastly, it’s free!

Facebook Desktop is an Adobe Air based application that lets you get all the latest updates on your Facebook account without opening a web browser. You’ll get instant notifications right on your desktop so you’ll not miss anything!

To use Facebook Desktop, first you must have Adobe Air installed on your computer. Then download and install Facebook Desktop.

* Since Adobe Air can be installed in any OS, you can use Facebook Desktop in any OS too!

Once installed, launch Facebook Desktop. Enter your Facebook credentials then click Login.

Once you’ve successfully logged in, you’ll see a welcome note by Facebook Desktop above the notification area. From here, you’ll also receive all the notifications so even if you’re doing anything, like for example, while I’m writing this post, the notifications just keep on popping up. When you click the notifications, your web browser will open and re-direct you to the post.

You can also control which notifications would you like to appear.

With Facebook Desktop, you can still do your regular activities while keeping up with the latest happenings on your Facebook account.
