Talking about backup software, actually, I have already used a lot and most of them work really well. However, my regular complaint is that mostly are very complicated to use. And as a non-expert or a beginner, I ended up not using them and skipping the backup process. But last week, I received an email from Softland and they ask me if I want to try their award-winning backup software, Backup4all. I decided to try it and here’s my experience with it.

Backup4all: What is it?

Backup4all is one of the most feature-rich backup software that you can find on the web. It is a Windows utility that is designed to protect your important files from partial or total loss by automating backup tasks, password protecting and compressing it to save storage space. What I like most about this application is its intuitive interface that makes it very user-friendly, perfect for both beginners and professionals! It also has a backup wizard that will guide you throughout the whole process.

Backup4all Professional

Among the three versions, Backup4all Professional offers the most advance options and features. It lets you easily backup to any local or network drive, backup to FTP (with support for SSL encryption, proxy server, passive mode), SFTP, backup to DVD, CD, Blu-ray, HD-DVD, or other removable media devices such as USB drives.

Backup4all Professional: Wizard Tour

As a beginner, I find it very easy to use because of its backup wizard. I just have to follow the guide and click Next to proceed to the next steps.

Backup4all Professional offers 4 types of backups:

• FULL - starting point for all other backups and contains all the data in the folders and files that are selected to be backed up
• DIFFERENTIAL – contains all files that have changed since the last full backup
• INCREMENTAL – it stores all files that have changed since the last full, differential or incremental backup
• MIRROR - identical to a full backup, with the exception that the files are not compressed in ZIP files

Backup4ll Professional can also automate the backup process for you. You can choose if you want to do it daily, weekly, monthly, or if you want, you can also do it manually. However, if you choose manually, there’s always a tendency that you forget to do the backup process.

Once you’re done with the wizard, you’re now ready to run your backup! The speed of the backup process depends on how big your files are.

Once the backup is done, you’re now confident that your files are safe. Just make sure you take good care of the CD or USB or wherever you save the backup file. If you need to restore the backup, just click the Restore button and follow the wizard.

Backup4all Professional also comes with a sidebar gadget that you can use to easily and quickly control your backup jobs. (Applicable to Windows Vista and 7 only)

Windows Live SkyDrive is really awesome! Uploading and downloading files is so easy and fast. It’s so easy to share your files online with your friends and family! Of course you wouldn’t be able to use SkyDrive unless you have a Windows Live account like hotmail.com or live.com. So if you’re planning to buy an external hard drive, think again. For me, online storage is a safer backup tool since no one can steal it from you (make sure that you have a strong password) and you can easily access it anytime and anywhere as long as there’s an internet connection which is not a big problem nowadays.

Going back to SkyDrive, if you’re concerned about your “privacy”, you don’t have to worry because you set the password and you decide who can see your files so you’re confident that your data is in your control.

And also, SkyDrive is just like your normal “My Documents” folder on your PC; you can create new folders easily, separate your “Personal files” from your “Business files”, and etc.

You can easily share your files to your family and friends even if they don’t have a Windows Live account by sending them a link through email. And also, each folder on Windows Live SkyDrive has a unique web address that you can send to your friends for direct access.

How to restore Firefox bookmarks:

1. Open Firefox.

2. On the Menu bar, go to Bookmarks and click Organize Bookmarks.

3. A new window will pop-up. Click Import and Backup, hover over Restore and click Choose File.

4. Now we have to locate the bookmark backup (Firefox automatically backup your bookmarks). Double-click My Computer -> Local Disk (C:) -> Documents and Settings -> “user name with which you log into Windows” -> Application Data -> Mozilla -> Firefox -> Profiles

Example: C:\Documents and Settings\Christian\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

5. Inside the Profiles folders you should see a single directory or multiple directories if you are using multiple Firefox Profiles. Select your Default Firefox Directory.

Example: c5qmjibe.default

6. Inside this Directory you will see a folder called “bookmarkbackups” go into this folder. You will see a bunch of html files. These are the bookmarks that have been backup for the last five days by Firefox.

7. Select the file with the latest date. Click Open.

8. Restart Firefox.

You’re done!

It is so important to always backup your bookmarks and plugins so if something bad happens, you can easily restore them. It really hurts if you lose all your bookmarks in just a snap like what happened to me before. That’s why after that incident, it has become my hobby to backup all my Firefox bookmarks, plugins and other important items on a weekly basis.

FEBE backs up your extensions, themes, bookmarks, preferences, passwords, cookies and just about everything else Firefox offers (it can even backup/restore your entire profile). You can selectively restore only the items you need. For instance, you may just want your bookmarks restored and leave everything else as it was.

How to use FEBE to backup your Firefox bookmark and extensions:

1. Download and install FEBE.

2. Restart your browser.

3. Before you can backup your Firefox, let’s customize first your newly installed FEBE. On the Menu bar, Go to Tools then hover over FEBE and click FEBE Options.

4. Go to Directory tab and choose your Backup Destination Directory. (This is the folder where FEBE will create the backup files).

5.  After you setup your Backup Destination Directory, go to Options tab.

6. Select your Backup Type. (To know more about the different types of backup, click the small button beside it and a window will popup with the definitions of each backup types).

7. If you choose Selective type:

Proceed to “Backup items” option and check other items that you want to backup on the dropdown box and click OK.

* If you choose the “Full Profile” these options are automatically disabled.

8. To perform the backup, go to Tools, hover over FEBE and click Perform Backup. Just wait for it to finish the backup process.

9. You will receive a backup report on a separate tab once the backup is done.

That’s it! All you have to do now is to take care of the backup files. You may burn it on CD or save it on your USB.

You may also want to schedule the backup of your Firefox extensions. How?

Just go to FEBE Options. Go to Schedule tab and choose your preferences.
