It’s sometimes annoying when we visit a website and we want to search its content but we can’t find the search box. However, if you’re using Google Toolbar, you can use the “Search Site” feature to search the content of the website you’re currently browsing. But since I’m not a big fan of the said toolbar, I tried to look for an alternative and luckily, I found some tools!

Actually, another reason why I decided to look for “search within a site” tools is because I’m using Adsense for search on my blog and Google doesn’t recommend the owner to use their own search box.
From Google Adsense Support page:
We strongly recommend that you do not use the search box on your site to perform searches yourself. Besides increasing the risk of accidental clicks on your own ads, searching through AdSense for search will result in reports that don’t properly reflect the traffic to your pages.
So if you’re also using Adsense for search on your blog and you don’t want to get banned, use the Google Toolbar or try these “search within a site” tools that I found.
1. Search Site
This Firefox add-on is really my favorite because it’s so simple and it doesn’t add any buttons that can clutter my browser. Once Search Site has been installed on your Firefox, you can see a tiny green button inside your search box and that’s its icon. If you want to search a site you’re currently browsing, just type your query in the search box and click the Search Site icon and your default search engine will open with the results – that simple!

You can also search using its context menu item. Just select text within a page and then right-click on the selected text and click “Search Site for selection“.

2. Goog All Sites & Similar Sites Search
Unlike Search Site, this Firefox add-on is a bit messy because it adds a search box on your status bar and the appearance is not that appealing. But what’s great about this add-on is that it’s using similar site search. So aside from just searching the site you’re currently viewing, it also gives you the list of websites similar to the one opened in active tab.

If having a search box on your status bar is not a big problem for you, this one is a good choice!

3. Insite Search
Insite Search is also a nice Firefox add-on and it adds a tiny “Search” button beside your search box.

4. SearchASite.net
SearchASite.net or Search Within A Website is a website that uses the Google powered search tool to search within a specific site on the web.

Simply enter the URL of the website you want to search and also your query and hit Enter or click Search Within This Site button.
