Few weeks ago, I received a file from my friend and I tried to open it in Microsoft Word 2003, but it didn’t open and it’s from Mac Word 2008. So I tried to look for an online converter to convert it into .doc but I couldn’t find anything. So here’s what I did.
This is how the file looks like in Windows XP:

When I tried to open it in Word 2003, here’s what happened:

And now, I’ll tell you the things I did to open Mac Word in Windows Vista or XP.
Step 1. Manually add .docx extension on the file. To do this, just double click the name of the file and put .docx at the end of it. (Why .docx? Because we’ll convert it later into .doc which you can open in both Word 2003 and 2007 if you have Compatibility Pack installed)

Step 2. After adding .docx extension on the file, it will look like a Word 2007 file already but you still can’t open it. What you have to do now is to open you web browser and go to Zamzar.com. (This is where we will convert the file into .doc)
Step 3. Now that you’re in Zamzar, browse the file you want to convert and that is the .docx file. Choose .doc as the format you want to convert to. Enter your email address where you will receive the converted file then click Convert and click OK.

Step 4. Open your email and click the link where you can download the converted file.
That’s it! You can now open the Mac Word document on your Windows XP or Vista. Just in case you couldn’t open the file in Vista, you may have to download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, don’t worry because it’s free!
